OUR STORY

FAIRYTALE BEGINS OHIO, USA.

The Airstream brand began in 1929, when founder Wally Byam decided to expand on his great love for sailing, travel and new experiences by building his own caravan. After much persistence from friends to build more, he opened his first Airstream factory in Culver City, California, in 1931. Our girl was born in the USA at the factory of Jackson Center, Ohio, where they still make Airstreams to this day. She is a 1973 model, constructed as an Airstream “Safari” Land Yacht.

From CALI to MELBS to BYRON to US!

We know that our Airstream lived most of her early life in California making regular trips along that gorgeous Cali coastline. There's also proof of her travelling pretty extensively within the US (we found some cool 1970's brochures hidden in the interior of the van from various states). She was imported into Australia in 2013 by a vintage car collector in Melbourne. A short while later she was sold and took up her residency on a beautiful farm in Byron Bay. After some extensive research, we found that she was for sale, and took a trip up to the Byron Bay farm for the day to check her out. Instantly we fell in love - SOLD!!..... and so the adventures of "The Airstream Social" began.

GO YOUR OWN WAY!

It's tradition for Airstream owners to give their caravan a nickname. We weren't aware of any previous name given to our girl, so we chose to call her “Stevie”. Why? As huge Fleetwood Mac fans, we just couldn't go past the music and one particular icon that represented the 70's any better than Ms Stevie Nicks. We would work late into the night listening to Fleetwood Mac playlists which all helped us bring this project to life. So, whilst our business name is officially The Airstream Social, she will always be fondly known as "Stevie" by our closest friends and guests..

AIRSTREAM FACT:

Trailering was so popular in the early days of Airstream that in the mid 1930s there were about 48 trailer companies, but within 5 years there were 400. Of those 400 companies, Airstream is the only one that remains to this day.

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE THAT JUST POP UP TO BYRON FOR A DAY.... AND COME HOME WITH A VINTAGE AIRSTREAM?!?

Hey! We are Paul and Catherine. The decision to buy Stevie came about very quickly. After working in senior travel industry roles for a combined number of (scary) years, it meant that we'd both been lucky enough to work closely with and learn from the very best global travel brands first hand. The constant innovation, professionalism and excellence in customer service that those brands adopt has always been a huge driving force for us and something we strive to replicate every day at The Airstream Social.

A LABOUR OF LOVE

So why an Airstream? In short, Airstreams make people curious. Their presence never fails to create a head turn and a need to know more… They are fun, whimsical and above all, they are classic!

Giving our girl a new burst of life was a true privilege and a labour of love. And now, we are proud to share Stevie with our guests to let her shine in all of her polished, vintage glory!

We hope you enjoy our gorgeous gal as much as we have enjoyed creating her for you..
